White Elephants Exhibition
October 11, 2019 - January 3, 2020
Pompano Beach Cultural Center Art Gallery
This exhibition features the painting and installation works of Cuban artist Guillermo Portieles – presented to PBCC by LAAP/Maria Napoles. Guillermo Portieles (b. 1963) is a Cuban artist whose paintings reflect social commentary on modernity. His use of architectural elements in his artwork represents their dual function, according to the artists, as shelters that protect us from the elements, and as mnemonic devices that house our memories. When one enters a building one has visited in the past, it brings forth memories believed to have been long forgotten. Portieles graduated from the San Alejandro Arts Academy, and then attended Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) for three years – both institutions in Cuba. He has served as a Fine Arts Professor of for various schools, including ISA. His artwork has been exhibited in Cuba, Europe and the U.S.A.
